Walter Mruk, OFM Conv., died Thursday, August 4, 2011 at Mary's Meadow in Holyoke.

Born in Mahonoy City, PA on May 17, 1925, he was a son of the late Joseph and Anna (Igielski) Mruk. Fr. Walter entered the Conventual Franciscan Friars in 1942, and following a year at St. Joseph Cupertino Novitiate in Ellicott City, MD, he professed his vows of poverty, chastity and obedience on August 15, 1943.

He then pursued studies of philosophy at St. Joseph Cupertino Friary, MD from 1941-1945 and studies in theology at St. Hyacinth Seminary, Granby, MA and Grand Seminary, Montreal, Canada from 1945-1949. He was ordained to the Priesthood on June 11, 1949 by Bishop Christopher J. Weldon in St. Michael's Cathedral, Springfield, MA.

He received his S.T.L. Theology Degree from the Grand Seminary, Canada in 1950 and a Masters in Education from Canisius College, NY in 1963. Fr. Walter's assignments included Assistant Pastor at St. Stanislaus Parish, Chicopee and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, New Bedford, MA; teacher at St. Joseph Cupertino Seminary, St. Hyacinth Seminary, Bishop Ryan High School, Buffalo, NY, and Archbishop Curley High School, Baltimore, MD; Associate Pastor at Mater Dolorosa Parish, Holyoke; Guardian and Pastor at St. Stanislaus Kostka Friary and Parish, Sharon, PA, St. Anthony of Padua Friary/Corpus Christi Parish, Buffalo, NY, St. Joseph's Friary and Parish, Peabody, MA and Holy Cross Friary and Parish, Fall River, MA; and Chaplain at the Motherhouse for the Daughters of the Immaculate Conception, New Britain, CT. For the past six years Fr. Walter resided at St. Hyacinth Residence, Chicopee and more recently at Mary's Meadow, Holyoke.

Fr. Walter was predeceased by his siblings, Joseph Mruk, Edward Mruk, Helen Dudeck and Sr. Donald Mruk, FSSJ, and by his niece, Peggy Ronaghan and nephew, Walter Mruk. Fr. Walter is survived by his nieces, Barbara Papuga, of Ludlow and Eileen Riordan, of Holyoke; his nephews, Joseph Mruk, of Belchertown, John Mruk, of Chicopee and Dr. Donald Mruk, of Athol, MA; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and his Franciscan Conferes and Sisters.

Fr. Walter will lie in state on Monday from 6-7 PM at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr, 566 Front St., Chicopee, followed by a Franciscan Wake Service at 7 PM. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 11 AM in St. Stanislaus Basilica. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Chicopee. Memorial contributions may be made to the Franciscan Education Fund, 12300 Folly Quarter Rd., Ellicott City, MD 21042. Kozikowski Funeral Home is assisting in arrangements.
