He graduated from Brown University, Providence, Rhode Iisland, in 1901, was a teacher at the Providence Friends School and was a representative for Ginn and Company book publishers, (1901-11). Relocating to Michigan, he was controller of Warren Motor Car Company (1911-13), manager of Firestone Tire and Rubber (1913-18) and secretary of Detroit Pressed Steel Company (1918-21). He also was president of Cadillac Motors (1921-25), president White Star Refining Company (1925-33) and general manager of Socony-Vacuum Oil Company, (1933-46). In 1947, he was elected as a Republican to the Eightieth Congress, serving until 1949. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he organized the Industrial Service Bureau in Washington, D.C. and was a business consultant until his retirement in 1954.
