U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of Michigan, in 1857, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1858 and commenced to practice law in Detroit, Michigan. During the Civil War, he served as a Major assistant adjutant general of the Cavalry Corps, Military Division of Mississippi, Union Army. After the war, he resumed the practice of law and was a professor of law at the University of Michigan, (1886-93). In 1893, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John Logan Chipman, serving until 1895. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was again professor of law at the University of Michigan, (1895-97) and resumed the practice of law until his death at age 68.
