U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Middlebury College, in 1830, taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1835 and proceeded to practice law in Detroit, Michigan. He was Detroit City Attorney in 1837, a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives, (1838-48) and prosecuting attorney for Wayne County, (1843-46). In 1849, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first Congress, serving until 1851. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was again a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives, (1859-60) and postmaster Detroit, Michigan, (1860-61).
