Lillian Nesbitt Wallace
(02/20/2003) Lillian Nesbitt Wallace, born October 17, 1908, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 18, 2003, at the age of 94.
Born in Beaumont, Texas, she was the daughter of Olive Cora McGlaun and Sylvester Gregg Nesbitt and was their only child. Lillian was an Austin area resident for over 64 years. Lillian graduated from South Park High School in Beaumont, Texas at the age of 16. She earned her teacher's certificate from South Park Jr. College (now Lamar University) and taught fifth grade for four years. On December 28th, 1928, she wed Lacy Lamar Wallace of Port Neches, Texas in South Park Methodist Church. Lillian continued to teach until the birth of their children, Lamar Nesbitt Wallace in 1932, Carl Milton Wallace, 1935, and Lillian Elaine Wallace (Laymon) in 1936.
In 1939, the family relocated to Austin where Mrs. Wallace was employed at Camp Swift Army Base and resumed degree studies at the University of Texas, completing a four-year degree plan. In 1954, she returned to teaching in the Del Valle school district where she taught fourth grade. During the summers, Mrs. Wallace began coursework for a degree in Library Science completing the program in 1976. She worked as head librarian at Popham, Hornsby-Dunlap, Creedmoor and Lamar Elementary schools. She played a very active role in the Popham PTA for many years and holds an honorary Life Membership. Mrs. Wallace touched the lives of thousands of children showing them a love for learning and reading through determination and dedication.
During these years, Mrs. Wallace held many outside interests centering around her church and community. She played piano and taught Sunday school and also served as Church School Superintendent. Lillian was very active in the Order of the Eastern Star in which she served as Worthy Matron during numerous years in Fidelis Chapter #963 and Taylor Chapter #48 and received Grand Chapter appointments. She leaves many beloved friends whom she was privileged to know for so many years. She also served on the Board of Directors for Order of the Rainbow for Girls, with Austin Assembly #5 and so enjoyed being "Grandmother" to the girls. She was currently active as Secretary of the Board at the time of her death.
Mrs. Wallace was preceded in death by her father, Sylvester Gregg "George" Nesbitt, her mother, Olive Cora Nesbitt, her husband, Lacy L. Wallace, and her son, Lamar N. Wallace. She is survived by her son, Carl Milton Wallace and his wife, Nancy of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Elaine Wallace Laymon of Austin; 13 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren and three first cousins: Beatrice Bice, Elva Smith Chalfont, and Betty Lou Barrington.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 20, 2003, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Fidelis Chapter #963's Scholarship Fund. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 21, 2003, in the Colonial Chapel of Cook- Walden Funeral Home with Reverend Don Long officiating. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park.
Her life was best exemplified by the verses in Proverbs 31 which tell us, "Strength and dignity are her clothing and she smiles at the future, she opens her mouth in wisdom and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue, she looks well to the ways of her household, her children rise up and bless her. 'Many daughters have done nobly but you excel them all.' A woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised."
