Clyde was a middle child born in Oklahoma to preacher Charles Shields and Lola Lusta Scott Shields. During the dust bowl, the family moved to California. Clyde grew up in El Centro, Imperial County, but following his father's circuit preaching across California up to Washington, working on farms for income.

He says he graduated in 1938 from Glad Tidings Bible School (according to a tape recording) but evidence points to 1941 (He may have meant started to attend at that time). He enlisted for WWII while in San Francisco, and served in the Philippines as a medic. Upon the end of the war, he married Virginia Williams in 1946, whom he met at his father's church in Gardena, CA. Within the year, the couple became missionaries to the Philippines. He was the founder of Miracle Missions, San Fernando, La Union. Ordained minister and well-loved man of God. Father of 4 children, 3 born in the Philippines, and 1 in the USA while on furlough.

Please note: the grave location is San Fernando, La Union, Luzon, Philippines. The grave is located on top of the mountain at Miracle Missions, overlooking the south China Sea. The gravesite was rumored to be in bad shape or non existent as of 2018.
