Served as a Major in the New Castle County Delaware Militia during the French & Indian War and as a Brigadier General of the New Castle County Delaware Militia in 1775. Elected to Delaware's 1st General Assembly and served as the Speaker of the House in 1776. Became the 1st President (Governor) of Delaware and served from February 12, 1778 until captured by the British and became a Prisoner Of War on September 3, 1777. Finally Paroled by the British to Wilmington, August 1778. One of the founders of the Delaware Medical Society in 1789.
