Businessman. In partnership with his brother, Governor Abner Coburn, he operated A & P Coburn, a surveying, land selling and lumbering business. The Coburns expanded their holdings to include banks, insurance and railroads, and were among the wealthiest citizens of Maine. They were also noted philanthropists, donating to schools and colleges throughout Maine, as well as government buildings, parks and other projects in Somerset County and Skowhegan. Another of Philander's brothers was US Congressman Stephen Coburn.
