Religous Leader. Jenkin Lloyd Jones was born in Cardiganshire, Wales. In 1844, the family emigrated to the United States and settled in Wisconsin. Jenkin was the seventh of ten children born to Richard Lloyd Jones and Mary Thomas James. Jenk enlisted in 1862 in the 6th Battery of the Wisconsin Volunteer Army. His military service included the battles of Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain and Atlanta. He suffered a broken foot at Missionary Ridge that required him to walk with a cane for the rest of his life. Jenk returned to Wisconsin after the war. He told his family that he had had a religious experience and decided to study for the ministry. In 1866, he enrolled in the Meadville Theological School in Meadville, Pennsylvania. He founded All Souls Unitarian Church in Chicago, Illinois, as well as its community outreach organization, the Abraham Lincoln Centre. He was a founder and long-time editor of Unity. Jenk met Susan Charlotte Barber during his time in Meadville. They married after his graduation in 1870. Jenk and Susan had two children: Mary and Richard Lloyd Jones.
