FAMILY MEMOIRS - Peggy Ann (COOPER):
**********************************
My mother, Hazel Lillian Gowen, had no memory of the mother who abandoned her. Hazel was raised by her aunt's daughter where she received harsh treatment. She spoke of her unhappy childhood, the lack of warmth and love she longed to have. She was deprived of formal education and decent clothing; photos reveal her unkempt appearance. Lack of nutrition caused her teeth to become what is known as 'milk-teeth' and her hair thin and dry. She remembers washing floors, endlessly on her hands and knees and working like a slave. Her mother's abandonment forever burned in her thoughts, and she never fully recovered from the rejection and lack of love.
Her brother, Paul, was mean to her as children, and as an adult related stories of his pranks and thought it was comical.
Her memories of her aunts and grandfather, James Eugene Gowen, were unpleasant. James was an extremely strong man, and in later years he and his wife were living apart.
Fortunately, she married a man who was kind and thoughtful. They met at the Pepperell Mills where they were both employed. Although their marriage struggled, he stayed with her faithfully and took good care of her.
They suffered the loss of their son, Jack, at age 14 who was killed while walking home from school by a drunken driver.
Despite her idiosyncratic ways, she was a loyal mother and Christian woman. She left an indelible impression of 'love' to all who really knew her.
