Florence Ward, resident of Grass Valley, died August 5, 2011. She passed away peacefully in her sleep with her family at her side.

Florence (Flo) Ward was born on April 28, 1913 in Trenton, N.J. She lived and worked in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and was the Controller for a water well drilling company in the Delaware Valley area of eastern Pennsylvania for over 30 years. During her career she also served as Secretary to the Pennsylvania Water Well-Drillers Association for many years. She and her husband Joseph Ward moved to Grass Valley in 1988 to be closer to their children.

Flo was a long-time collector and dealer of antique dolls. She was a charter member of the Delaware Valley Doll Club in Pennsylvania which is still one of the largest and most active doll clubs on the east coast. She began doing doll shows on weekends in the 1940's. As her doll collection grew, she bought and sold dolls from her doll shops, both at home in Bucks County, PA and in other locations over the years. She traveled extensively as an appraiser and judge for doll shows throughout the United States. Flo's specialty was antique baby dolls and was reflected in the name of her business, "Flo's Maternity Ward". Although her husband Joe passed away in 1995, she continued to live in their house in Grass Valley with her dog "Danny Boy," next door to her daughter Sharyn and close to her son Pat and their families. Her daughter Eileen was also a frequent visitor and had several extended stays with her. After she stopped doing doll shows, she remained involved with her dolls, maintaining her doll shop in her house and doing business by appointment. She helped found the Keepsake Doll Club of Nevada County and was an active member of the Sacramento Pioneer Doll Club until health issues prevented her from attending regular club meetings.

She was also an active and involved member of the community from the moment she arrived in Grass Valley. She was a charter member of the Welcome Wagon Club of the Gold Country and a member of Nevada County Newcomers club. Her outgoing personality, sense of humor, and enthusiasm helped welcome new residents to the area and made them feel at home in the community. Flo also was an active member of the St. Canice Altar Society. Besides her dolls and family, Flo's other great love was serving as a "Pink Lady" volunteer with the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She served for over 20 years in several different capacities but primarily working in the hospital gift shop, serving as manager and buyer for the shop. One of her many achievements was coordinating the establishment of the flower shop in the hospital lobby.

Flo was also an active traveler. She attended 25 consecutive United Federation of Doll Clubs (UFDC) national conventions, went on numerous cruises, and made regular bus trips to Reno to play the nickel slot machines. She was ready to travel anytime with family and liked to take her dog "Danny Boy" with her whenever she could. Her three children, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren had a hard time keeping up with her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Ward, in January 1995.

She is survived by her son, Patrick Ward and daughter-in-law Judith Ward of Nevada City, CA; daughter, Sharyn Turner and son-in-law Dr. Barry Turner of Grass Valley, CA; and daughter, Eileen Norod of Manahawkin, NJ. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; Kevin Ward of Sausalito, CA, Karin Ward of Rocklin, CA, Brian Ward of Lincoln, NE, Brady Turner of Scotts Valley, CA, Meghan Thomas of Bristol, United Kingdom, Andrea Onorato of Malvern, PA, Amy Onorato of Philadelphia, PA, and Alison Norod of Brooklyn, NY. She is also survived by ten Great-Grandchildren.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, August 12th at 10:00am at St. Canice Catholic Church, 317 Washington St. in Nevada City, CA. There will also be a graveside service at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Rough & Ready Hwy., Grass Valley, CA immediately following the mass. Reception and lunch will be at St. Canice Hall, 236 Reward Street, Nevada City, CA.
