US Congressman. He graduated from Amherst College, in 1825, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1831 and commenced to practice law in Pickensville, Alabama. He was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives, (1834-35, 45), was elected Attorney General of Alabama, in 1839 and appointed by Governor Fitzpatrick circuit judge in 1846. Moving to Iowa, in 1848, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second Congress, serving (1851-53). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed United States register in bankruptcy in 1866. Returning to Massachusetts, in 1869, he lived in retirement until his death at age 86.
