US Congressman. Born in Gardiner, Kennebec County, Maine, he graduated from Bates College Maine, in 1911 and Georgetown University Washington, D.C., in 1914. he was with the Interstate Commerce Commission and the Department of Education, Washington, D.C., (1913-14) a member of the commission for relief in Belgium, (1914- 15) and was decorated with the Medaille du Roi Albert. He was admitted to the bar in 1917 and commenced to practice law in Boston, Massachusetts. During World War I, he served as a Sergeant Major in the Coast Artillery, US Army, then as an instructor in law at Northeastern University, (1920-37), assistant district attorney of the western district of Massachusetts, (1922-26) and as District Attorney, (1927-30). In 1937, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-fifth Congress and to the net five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1949. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and was dean of the Western New England College School of Law, (1952-70). He died at age 94 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
