US Congressman. He received his place in American history after being elected to represent Massachusetts' 5th and 8th Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1819 to 1827. He was a member of the political party of Adams-Clay Federalist. He served as a member of the Massachusetts State Senate in 1829. Born the son of Reverend Joseph Lathrop of the First Church of West Springfield, he graduated from Yale College in 1792 before beginning his law studies. After becoming a lawyer, he served in various public offices such as county treasurer. From 1817 to 1821 he served as the Hampden County Attorney. In 1824 he was an unsuccessful candidate for the office of Governor of Massachusetts, losing to Levi Lincoln, Jr. Lathrop was the last Federalist nominee for Massachusetts governor. He married and had ten children. Showing the family's wealth and status in the state, the family plot has only a large obelisk with the surname "Lathrop" inscribed.
