Marshal of France. At the outbreak of World War II, he was in command of a Division, of the 15th Motorized Divisions. His division was encircled at Lille during the Battle of France, 1940 and he was captured by the Germans. Released in 1941, he was assigned to command French forces in North Africa. After the invasion of Algeria and Morocco, in November 1942, he commanded French forces during the Italian Campaign and was one of the crucial factors in the breaking German lines in May, 1944. He was also at the battle of the East of Rome and played an important part in the battle for Sienna. Following that assignment he was promoted Chief of Staff of French forces and was in charge of organizing the First French Army in the NATO Command after the war in 1947.
