US Senator. He immigrated to the United States in 1833, learned the art of pianoforte making in New York and moved to California in 1849. There he engaged in mining, mercantile pursuits and was a member of the California State Assembly, (1853-54, 1860-61). In 1863, he was elected as a Douglas Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1869. After his term he retired from public service and live in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, until his death at age 87.
