U.S. Congressman. Successful in mercantile pursuits, he was Mayor of Chelsea, Massachusetts, (1867-68), a member of the Massachusetts State Senate, (1871-72) and on the Governor’s council, (1873-74). In 1875, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth Congress, serving until 1876. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served as president of the National Association of Woolen Manufacturers, (1877-84), as president of the Boston Board of Trade, (1878-80) and as president of the New England Conservatory of Music. He also resumed his previous business interests until his death at age 67.
