Donald Winfield Porter, husband of Gloria Ellen (Wentzell) Porter, of Colington Harbour, Kill Devil Hills, died Aug. 13, 2011. Mr. Porter was born in Brockton, Mass., in 1925, and was the son of the late Leslie W. and Elsie (Smith) Porter of Brockton. Surviving are daughters, Donna Ellen Cahill of Coronado, Calif., and Wendy Porter Kerner of Kill Devil Hills; sons, David Winfield Porter of Clark Summit, Pa., and Leslie Donald Porter of North Wales, Pa.; a brother, Kenneth Leslie Porter of Arvada, Colo.; and five grandchildren, David John Kerner, Michael John Kerner, Kathleen Teal Kerner, Jacob Winfield Porter and Kaitlin Palisca Porter. Mr. Porter was active in the work of Grace Lutheran Church, Nags Head, for over 20 years. From 1998 to 2005 he served as president of the Church Council. He also served as an usher, as finance chairman, and as a participant in the Beach Food Pantry and Food for Thought Program. He was a member of the Colington Yacht and Racquet Club. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as a medical corpsman attached to the U.S. Fleet Marine Force and participated in the repatriation of the island of Guam on July 21, 1944. In June 2011, Mr. and Mrs. Porter observed their 64th wedding anniversary. Mr. Porter was employed in the professional service of the Boy Scouts of America and served for 35 years in various executive positions with Boy Scout councils including, Cambridge, Mass., Manchester, N.H., Binghamton, N.Y., Philadelphia, Bronx, N.Y., and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. He graduated from Brockton High School, Class of 1943, and Boston University School of Education, Class of 1950, with a bachelor's degree in Education. During his years in Scouting, while in Philadelphia, he developed the successful concept of Block Scouting to bring scouting to inner-city youth plagued by gang problems. This program was successfully funded through the Pennsylvania Neighborhood Assistance Act of 1968 enabling the program to reach an increasing number of youths. In 1986, following his retirement as Scout Executive of the U.S. Virgin Islands, the 16th Legislature passed Resolution No. 1262 honoring him for his service to the youth of the islands. In accordance with Donald's wishes, his remains will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church by the Sea, in Nags Head, Wednesday, Aug., 17, 2011, at 4:30 in the afternoon. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Grace Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or Hospice of Dare County will be appreciated.
