US Congressman. He graduated from Harvard University in 1844, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1847 and commenced to practice law in Concord, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives in 1858 and served in the Massachusetts State Senate in 1859. In 1869, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of George S. Boutwell and reelected to the Forty-second Congress, serving until 1872. After his term, he was appointed judge of probate for Middlesex County, Massachusetts, serving until his death at age 69.
