U.S. Congressman, Massachusetts Governor. He immigrated to the United States, with his family as a child and settled in Lowell, Massachusetts. He attended Harvard University, (1859-62), taught school, studied law and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war, he was admitted to the bar in 1865, served in the common council of Lowell, (1868-69), a member of the school committee, (1871-73) and Mayor of Lowell, (1880-81). He practiced law, was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives in 1885 and elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first Congress, serving (1889-91). After leaving Congress, he was elected the 38th Governor of Massachusetts, in 1894 and served until his death from kidney disease at age 53.
