Mary L. Purpur, 82, of Grand Forks, ND passed away Saturday, July 30, 2011 at home with family by her side.

Mary Lowene Schmid was born on May 28, 1929, the daughter of George and Sarah (Hale) Schmid, in Omaha, NE. She met her husband, Clfford Purpur in Nebraska and she moved with him to Grand Forks where they were married June 9, 1947. Mary worked the concessions at UND for 30 years and in the nursery at Grace Baptist Church for 30 years. She touched the lives of many children through her in home daycare of 60 years. Mary was an avid sports fan. She loved the New York Yankees and enjoyed watching tennis, hockey and football. She was also a very loyal fan of Grand Forks Central. She also enjoyed cooking and receiving new recipes. Mary and her husband, Cliff raised 8 children together and she also did foster care. She loved all animals especially her basset hound Piper. No matter what, her door was always open to visit. Most inportantly, her family was her life and she will always be rememabered as a caring, giving person.

She is survived by her children, Cliff (Betty), Grand Forks, ND. Dick (Kati), Grand Forks, ND, Bob (Cheri), Green Bay, WI, Gary (Cindy), Grand Forks, ND, Steve (Doreen), Oakdale, MN. Scott (Holly), Grand Forks, ND, Barb Purpur, Grand Forks, ND. Marci (Bruce, a very special son-in -law) Hecht, East Grand Forks, MN; 17 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and her wonderful neighbors, the Dorner family.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Cliff; her parents; a brother, George; and a special grandmother.

Memorials will be donated to Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Memorial service: 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 7, 2011 in Calvary Lutheran Church, 1405 S. 9th Street, Grand Forks.
Family Greeting: one hour before services in the church on Sunday.
Interment: Memorial Park Cemetery North, Grand Forks, ND.
