Until recently, Mrs. Baldwin lived in her home on North Gamwyn Drive. For the past 10 months of her life, she was a resident of Magnolia Gardens and Washington Care Center.
Mrs. Baldwin was born Oct. 12, 1907, to Bertha Fox McPhail and Bannie Fox McPhail in Slate Springs, Miss. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank Wilson Baldwin; three sisters, Gladys Alred, Annis Terry and Hazel Mattox; and two brothers, Lee McPhail and Billy McPhail. For many years of her life, Mrs. Baldwin received loving care and companionship from Mrs. Carolyn Moss, Mrs. Virginia Felts and members of her church family.
She was graduated at 16 years of age from Benton Academy, a private Methodist boarding high school, near Mathiston, attended Clarke College and was graduated from Mississippi College in Clinton.
She was one of the first Latin teachers in the state of Mississippi. She met her husband while they were both employed by Mississippi Power and Light Company. Later, she and her husband, Frank, established and operated radio stations WJPR in Greenville and KLPL in Lake Providence, La.
The daughter and granddaughter of Baptist preachers, Sudie Pearl was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church for over 60 years. She served in many areas of the church, including Sunday School teacher of the Seekers Ladies Class, a member of several pulpit committees and a member of the Chapel Building Committee.
She dedicated her life to teaching the word of God and frequently taught Bible studies in homes and other churches. The motto of her class served as the impetus of her life, “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you," Matthew 6:33. Not only did she speak the word of God, she lived it. She told a friend recently that “growing up she sat at her father's feet listening to the word of God, she studied the Bible, went to church on Sundays and Bible study on Wednesday nights, and that was her life."
There will be a visitation from 3 to 4 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church Chapel. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 407 Main St., Greenville, MS 38701.
