"The death of this venerable lady, which occurred last Sunday morning, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Browning, removes from our midst the oldest native-born resident of the village. She had been in ill health for a long time, but her naturally strong and vigorous constitution enabled her to bear her afflictions with fortitude and live to a remarkably old age, being in her 91st year. She was a woman of marked individuality, possessing a will and mind of her own, and on no occasion did she hesitate to express her honest convictions,
yet she always did so kindly, her sincerity winning many friends, regardless of her bluntness of speech. For many years she had been a consistent member of the Presbyterian Society, always faithful to her vows, and strict in her attendance at church. In her death Cooperstown has not only lost one of her oldest and most respected citizens, but nearly the last link has been broken that binds the
present with the past. May she rest in peace."
["The Otsego Farmer"(Cooperstown, NY), Friday, June 6, 1890]

Daughter of Thomas Shankland, Esp and Rachel (nee'Tourneur)
Married John Holmes Prentis on 3 June 1828
Mother of Alexander Shankland Prentiss
John Holmes Prentiss, Jr.
Rachel Ann Prentis
Charlotte Darbyshire Prentiss
