Mattie Silks
Birth: 1846
Death: Jan. 7, 1929

Western Entrepreneur. Born Martha Ready in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, she became a very successful madam owning brothels in the 19th Century American West. She began her career running a brothel in Springfield, Illinois, then made her way through Missouri and Kansas. With the demand for women due to the western gold rush, she relocated to the west and opened a brothel in Colorado. Located on Holladay Street, her brothel was the most successful in Denver, (1877-98). In 1909, she purchased the lavish House of Mirrors parlor, continued to work as a madam and was also successful in other business venues. Mattie herself was never a prostitute, she died at age 83 in Denver, Colorado. At the time of her death she had over $2 million in cash, jewelry and real estate property. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
