Physician, Suffragist, Educator. Canada's first practicing female physician. Dr. Stowe began her working career as a teacher at the age of fifteen. She would become the first woman principal of a Canadian public school. When she later decided to study medicine, no Canadian medical college would allow her admission. She enrolled at the New York Medical College for Women, a homoeopathic institution in New York City, receiving her degree in 1867. Upon graduation she set up practice in Toronto. Unable to obtain a medical license she practiced without one. She was finally allowed to attend classes at the Toronto School of Medicine in 1870; however, there is no record of her having taken the exams necessary to obtain her license. The College of Physicians and Surgeons finally granted her one on July 16, 1880. Dr. Stowe organized the Women's Medical College in Toronto in 1883. An advocate of votes and equality for women, in 1889 she founded and was the the first president of the Dominion Women's Enfranchisement Association.
