John Russell Hughes, 46, president of Hills Bank & Trust Co., died Monday of a gunshot wound at the bank's Hills office. A memorial service will be Wednesday at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Memory Gardens. Friends may call Tuesday at St. Andrews, with the George L. Gay Funeral Home in charge. Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew, West High School or Mercy Hospital Foundation.

Hughes was born June 4, 1939, in Iowa City, a son of Cecil and Lucille Hanley Hughes. He attended rural elementary school, graduated from Iowa City High School in 1957, Iowa State University in 1961 and the University of Iowa College of Law in 1964.

He married Karen E. Bangerter Aug. 21, 1965, in St. Clair Shores, Mich.

Hughes was a trustee of the University of Colorado School of Banking, director of the Iowa Bankers Association, member of the Mercy Hospital Foundation board, treasurer and elder of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, past president of the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Iowa City Rotary Club, former member of the Mercy Hospital Advisory Board and fiscal management committee, past master of Fellowship Lodge, A.F. & A.M., in Sharon Center; past patron of Corona Chapter of Eastern Star, member of the Shrine Club and former member of the executive board of the Hawkeye Area Council of Boy Scouts.

Survivors include his wife; two daughter, Emily, 17, and Amy, 14, and his parents, all of Iowa City; two brothers, Gary of Iowa City, and James of Des Moines; a sister, Carolyn (Mrs. James) Smith, Iowa City; aunts and an uncle, Oren and Bertha Alt and Emma Hanley of Iowa City.
