CAPT. WILLIAM HENRY ACKER was born in Wayne County, N. Y., 5 Dec 1833. He oome to St. Paul in 1854 and entered the law office of Rice, Hollinshead & Becker, where he remained about one year. He afterwards held the position of bookkeeper in the banking house of Marshall & Co. Young Acker early developed a taste for military life, and devoted much of his time to the study of works on military science. In 1856 he took an active part in organizing the "Minnesota Pioneer Guards," the first uniformed military company in Minnesota and in 1858 became captain of that organization. Gov. Ramsey,
appreciating his military talent, appointed him, in 1860, Adjutant General of the state, and in that position he had the honor of issuing the orders for the formation of the first volunteer regimen,t formally tendered to the government to aid in putting down the Rebellion. He raised a company for that regiment,·then resigned,
and led his· company ("C") on that fatal field-the first Bull Run. On this occasion his gallantry was so conspicuous, though severely wounded, that President Lincoln gave him a captaincy in the regular army, and at the head of his company ("C," 16th U. S. Infantry) he gave up his life on the morning of the 7 Apr 1862, in the battle of "Shiloh."
Thus was one of Minnesota's noblest citizens and soldiers· cut down in the prime of life, while defending his country from the armed hosts of rebellion. He was buried on the battlefield, near Old Shiloh Church, but the remains were subsequently removed to St. Paul and interred in Oakland cemetery. His funeral, probably the largest ever witnessed in St. Paul, was conducted under the auspices of Ancient Landmark Lodge. Acker Post, G. A. R., of St Paul was named in honor of Capt. Acker.
Bro. Acker was· initiated in Ancient Landmark Lodge 25 Dec1856, passed 3 Jan and raised 8 Jan 1857. He was also a member of Minnesota Chapter, R." . A.". M.".
