Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Educated at Rockhill institute, he became a prominent figure in the region of Baltimore, Maryland. He was the head of the James S. Gary & Son textile manufacturing firm and was president of the Merchants and Manufacturers Association. He also was vice-president of the Gas Company of Baltimore, a director in the Savings Bank of Baltimore, the Baltimore American fire Insurance Company, the Merchants and Manufacturers Insurance Company and the Baltimore Trust and Guarantee Company. He served as a delegate to the Republican National Conventions (1872, 76, 80, 84, 88, 92, 96) and was a member of the Republican national committee (1880-96). In 1897, President McKinley appointed Gary the 38th Postmaster General of the United States, serving until he resigned from office on account of illness in 1898.
