U.S. Congressman. After serving in the War of 1812, he was appointed a Captain and Assistant District Quartermaster General in the United States Army, serving (1814-15). In 1825, he was elected as an "Adams-Clay Republican" (National Republican Party) to the Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses, serving until 1829. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he engaged in literary pursuits until his death at age 72.
