"Former Auditor Takes Own Life/Mental Depression Blamed in Death,"
by Allen Wardrip
Tipton Daily Tribune, Friday, 21 May 1954, p. 1

"Hazel Edward (Marty) Castor, 57, former county auditor here, took his own life with a 20-gauge shotgun Thursday night after warning his family not to ‘come near me or I'll shoot,' Sheriff Jesse Owen told The Tribune today....
"Castor was a native of Tipton county and served from 1947 through 1950 as county auditor. Previous to that time he was appointed, April 2, 1945, to serve out the unexpired term of auditor J. J. Batchelor.
"He was an auditor candidate in the May 4 primary on the Republican ticket, but failed to gain the nomination.
"A veteran of World War I, Castor was actively engaged in early plans for Tipton's Memorial hospital which now serves the community.
"Castor attended schools in the county, being graduated from Tipton high school. He attended Hobbs Methodist church and was a member of Austin lodge 128, F. and A. M., American Legion post 46 and the Tipton Elks lodge. He also was affiliated with the Scottish Rite and Shrine in Indianapolis.
"Survivors include his widow, Hazel Hobbs Castor, stepson, Hilton Hobbs, route 4; three brothers, Bert and Walter Castor of Tipton county, and William Castor, Alexandria.
"Other survivors are three sisters, Mrs. Maude Burkett, Tipton; Mrs. Inez Hobbs, near Hobbs, and Mrs. Gertrude Fouch, near Goldsmith.
"Burial has been set for Monday at 2 p.m. when the body will be taken from the Copher and Fesler Funeral home in Elwood to City cemetery."
