U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1835, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1838 and commenced practice in Bath, New Hampshire. He was clerk of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, (1840-42), a member of the New Hampshire State -House of Representatives, (1843-45) and served in the New Hampshire State Senate, (1845, 47-48). In 1849, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first, Thirty-second and Thirty-third Congresses, serving until 1855. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
