At the end of his short life, Walter, Jr., the only son of the journalist, committed suicide in his family's garage on Christmas night, 1968. Having spent the previous two years on welfare, Winchell, Jr. had last been employed as a dishwasher in Santa Ana, California, but listed himself as a freelancer who for a time wrote a column in the Los Angeles Free Press, an alternate newspaper published in the 1960s and 1970s. Walter Winchell Jr., was 33.

Took this photo by mistake thinking it was Walter Winchell Sr..

The circumstances of photo was that I arrived after cemetery gates closed but a kind security guard escorted me to locate the grave under a cover of darkness being that I had traveled a long distance and was only passing through.

Regardless of all the work and effort to get the photo I ended up photographing the wrong marker since I could not read it properly due to the script, darkness, and urgency, BUT, in the end it worked out because there were no clear photos of Walter Winchell Jr.'s grave itself until now. So I'm pleased to have brought the tragic young man some justice in that aspect.
