Joseph was the son of Benedict Joseph Blandford & Malissa Ann Miles. He married Eliza Jane Gates on 30 September 1874, and they had nine children.

Joseph Blandford died after ten days' Illness. Mr. Joseph B Blandford died with pneumonia at his home at 608 East Third Street, Friday night about 5 o'clock. He had only been ill about ten days. Mr. Blandford was 57 years old at the time of his death and was well known in Owensboro. He leaves five children. His wife died about a few years ago. The funeral will be held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at St Paul's church. The remains will be buried at the Catholic Cemetery. (Note: in early 1900 the Catholic cemetery when mentioned for Owensboro burials meant Mater Dolorosa since Owensboro catholic churches did not have their own cemeteries (RLA).)
