U.S. Senator, Minnesota Governor. He graduated from the St. Paul College of Law, in 1918 and during the World War I, he served as a Private in the U.S. Army, (1918-19). After the war, he was admitted to the bar, but did not practice law choosing to engage in banking and the retail clothing business. He was the Minnesota State commissioner of securities in 1933 and Minnesota State commissioner of banks, (1933-35). He was appointed as a Farmer-Laborite candidate to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Thomas D. Schal, serving from December 1935 to November 1936. In 1936, he was elected as a Farmer-Labor candidate the 24th Governor of Minnesota, serving until 1939. During his tenure, a state geographic board was formed, county welfare boards were organized, compensation insurance for employers was initiated and state taxes on homesteads were eliminated. After leaving office, he engaged in agriculture pursuits until his death at age 89.
