Son of James Gordon and Elizabeth (Wattson) Thompson, he was born in South Carolina because his father and mother had gone there to help the abandoned slaves during the Civil War and his uncle, Brig. Gen. Rufus Saxton, Military Governor of South Carolina.

His parents moved to Washington DC abt 1880 and this is where Lewis lived. He married on 20 Mar 1897 in Washington DC, Mary Bell Swaim, daughter of David Gaskill and Virginia P.(Bell) Swaim. Lewis and Mary B.S. Thompson had issue:

Virginia Swaim Thompson born 5 April 1904

He was a third degree Master Mason affiliated with Lebanon Lodge #7 and a Charter Member of Temple Lodge in Washington DC.

For many years he was the southern manager of F. W. Bird and Company, a Massachusettes Roofing Concern.

Lewis committed suicide on Jan 14, 1932, supposedly because he lost everything in the stock market crash. His obituary says because of fear of an impending surgery. He shot himself in the head and died shortly thereafter.
