Acclaimed Musician. Known for "Bentonia style blues," Owens was a guitar player/singer and childhood friend of Skip James. Owens worked as a farmer in Bentonia and operated a juke joint as a side business. His music was documented by David Evans and Alan Lomax. Owens never left Bentonia until the last 10 years of his life. During that time, he played across America and Europe. --- Owens often played at the Blue Front Cafe in Bentonia with his longtime partner, harmonica player Bud Spires. In 1995, the two of them appeared in a TV commercial for Levi's which was filmed at the Blue Front Cafe. The grave is marked with a double headstone for Owens and his wife. The stone reads: Mr. L.F. Nelson (Jack Owens) Sunrise Nov. 17, 1904 Sunset Feb. 9, 1997. (bio by: Susan McMichael)
