Army PFC Otto William Hennings from Deuel County, South Dakota
Otto William "Jack" Hennings was drafted on March 19, 1941. Although originally part of a medical detachment, Otto was shipped overseas to England in December of 1943 as part of the Reconnaissance Squadron of the 24th Cavalry. He fought in the Battle of Normandy in France on D-Day. From France Hennings was sent on to Belgium.
He was killed while on a reconnaissance mission in Germany. Reports vary as to his category of death. One obituary contained information that he was killed instantly, another that he died of wounds received. All accounts agree that he died on December 21, 1944.
Otto was initially buried in the American Cemetery in Belgium. After the war his body was returned for burial in the Augusta Cemetery at Marietta, Minnesota.
