US Congressman. He was elected as a Whig to represent New York's 26th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from May 21 to September 25, 1841. He had immigrated to the United States from Scotland at age 18, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1804 and became a practicing attorney in Canandaigua, New York. From 1820 to 1856 he was President of the Ontario Bank and for many years was associated with the University of the State of New York, serving as both a Regent (from 1825) and Vice Chancellor (from 1845) until his death. Greig won a special election to the House of Representatives to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Francis Granger, only to resign himself four months later; this was his only venture into politics. He was also co-founder of the Ontario Female Seminary and served as President of the Ontario Agricultural Society.
