He was the son of Lt. Col. William Davis and Agnes Lanier. Of Georgia. Their marriage bond from Brunswick, Va. was dated Aug. 28, 1769 and signed by William Davis and William Lanier. He was child #8. He married Louisa Tucker Irvine on 10 Sep 1818 in Wilkes County, GA.

William was the son of Sampson Lanier (1715-1749) and Elizabeth Chamberlain (1716-1757). Sampson was the son of to Sampson Lanier and Elizabeth Washington. Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel Chamberlain.
