-- MONROE -- Mr. Sam William Rea, age 82, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away Saturday, September 3, 2011 in Hospice House of Union County.

He was born June 26, 1929 in Mecklenburg County, NC, the son of the late Mr. Louie Price Rea and the late Mrs. Lottie Champion Rea. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters: Bonnie Matthews and Edith Flowe; one brother: Hazel Rea. Sam was the retired co-owner of Rea's Food Store. He had also worked for many years as a salesman following his service as an engineer in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was also a Mason of the East Gate Lodge #692.

Sam is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Mary McRorie Rea of the home; children: Monty Rea, Cherie Rea Carter and husband Jason Carter, Kevin Rea, and Dale Rea all of Monroe, NC; one grandson: Emerson Carter of Monroe, NC; four sisters: Lucille Dempsey and husband William 'Bill' Dempsey of Gt. Barrington, MA, Nancy Barriere of Adams Trail, MD, Billie Rea of Indian Trail, NC, Rachel Rea of Indian Trail, NC; one brother: Dwight Rea of Mint Hill, NC.

The family will receive friends and relatives for visitation Monday, September 5, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Home in Monroe.

Funeral services for Mr. Rea will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 6, 2011 in the McEwen Colonial Chapel, with burial to follow in Lakeland Memorial Park.
