U.S. Congressman. Moving to New York, he was a U.S. Postmaster during the administrations of President Jackson and Van Buren, a member of the New York State Assembly in 1837 and clerk of Jefferson County, (1844-46). In 1857, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1861. After his term, he engaged in business venues and the manufacture of arms for the Union effort during the Civil War. After the war, he traveled in the western and southern states inspecting his business concerns. He also built sawmills for the construction of roads and railroads.
