Author, Journalist. Born a subject of the Austo-Hungarian Empire in Muljava, present day Ivančna Gorcia, Slovenia, he attended school at Višnja Gora and later became a follower of Fran Levstik, writer and leader of the Young Slovenes, a radical political group, who influenced him greatly. Jurčič is credited with writing the first modern novel in the Slovene language: “Deseti brat” (The Tenth Brother) which is now considered classic literature. He died at the age of 37 in Ljubljana. In 1982 his novel “Deseti brat” became a Yugoslavian feature film. The house in which he was born is now a museum.
