U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Washington and Jefferson College, Pennsylvania, in 1824, studied law in Richmond, Virginia, was admitted to the bar in 1826 and commenced to practice law in St. Clairsville, Ohio, in 1828. Moving to West Virginia in 1837, he was appointed deputy postmaster at Wheeling in 1838, was on a commission to settle jurisdiction of the Ohio River between Virginia and Ohio and was appointed by President Polk US Attorney for the western district of Virginia, (1848-50). In 1851, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second Congress and served until his resignation in 1852. He then was elected judge of the Circuit Court of Virginia, serving (1852-61). Retiring to his estate near Wheeling, West Virginia, he remained there until his death at age 81.
