US Congressman. Born Augustus Alexandria Chapman, in Union, Monroe County, Virginia, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1825 and commenced to practice law in his home town of Union, Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1835-41). In 1843, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth and Twenty-ninth Congresses, serving until 1847. After his term, he again served as a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1857-61). With the outbreak of the Civil War, he was appointed Brigadier General of the Virginia State militia in 1861, commanded his corps at the battles in the Kanawha Valley and his son Captain George Berne Chapman, Brigadier General Chapman's artillery battery. After the war, he resumed the practice of law and engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death at age 73 in Hinton, West Virginia.
