U.S. Senator. Graduating from the University of Virginia, from Yale College, in 1832, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Staunton, Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, (1841-42), a member of the Virginia State Senate, (1844-48) and a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1857-61). During the Civil War, he served as a member of Confederate States Senate, until 1865. After the war, he was the first ex-Confederate official elected as a Democrat in 1875, to the United States Senate, serving until his death at age 65.
