U.S. Congressman. Born the son of U.S. Congressman James Allison, Jr., in Beaver, Pennsylvania, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and did not practice law extensively. He was successful in the manufacture of hats and operated a tannery factory. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1846-47, 49). In 1851, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-second Congress, until 1853, then elected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress, serving (1855-57). Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention 1860 and appointed Register of the Treasury, in 1869, serving until his death at age 65 in Washington, D.C.
