Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete, Hall of Fame Professional Boxer. He was a member of the United States Olympic Boxing Team that participated in the 1920 Summer Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. There, at age 18, he won the Gold Medal in the Flyweight Division, defeating Anders Petersen of Denmark for the title. Three years later won the American Flyweight Title, defeating boxer Bud Taylor. From 1929 to 1931 he was the International Boxing Union flyweight champion. In 1931 he lost his title when he was knocked out by Victor Perez and three years later elected to retire from boxing. He had fought professionally for 14 years, taking on ten world champions during his career. He held, lost, then regained the title in a memorable stretch, between 1928 to 1931. He finished his career with a 99-22-8 record. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York in June of 1998.
