U.S. Congressman. Born in Bridgeton, New Jersey, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and during the War of 1812, served as a Brigade Major Inspector in the US Army. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1815 and commenced to practice law in Bridgeton. He was prosecuting attorney for the State of New Jersey, in 1824, a member of the New Jersey State General Assembly (1820-23), prosecutor of the pleas for Cumberland County in 1824 and United States District Attorney for the District of New Jersey, (1824-29). In 1843, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth Congress, serving until 1845. An unsuccessful for reelection, he was Attorney General of New Jersey, (1850-52) and Justice of the New Jersey State Supreme Court, serving (1852-69), then retired. He died at age 90 in Bridgeton, New Jersey.
