Revolutionary War Continental Congressman. He was a highly successful merchant in New York City, New York pre-Revolution. In 1774 he was elected as part of the delegation from New York State to the 1st Continental Congress, where he served until 1776. In that last year he served as a Congressional agent tasked with securing food, material, gunpowder, housing and other critical supplies for the Continental Army, even after his house in Queens, New York City was captured and occupied by British forces. After the British fully occupied Manhattan island, he resided in Connecticut until the end of the war and Independence was secured. His post-war career involved serving in several New York municipal positions and in rebuilding his family's mercantile business. His daughter married United States Constitution Signer Rufus King, and John Alsop's descendants would include the notable members of the King family, including New York Governor John Alsop King, Civil War Union Army Brigadier General Rufus King, and Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Rufus King Jr.
