She grew to young womanhood there and at age 24, she married her husband, Brookins, in nearby Charles City, IA on July 19, 1870. He was a Civil War veteran from an Illinois Regiment but was currently living in Forest City, IA. They returned there to start their married life.
During the next 13 years, six children would be born to their union. Three sons, however, would meet early deaths; one at 7 months, one at 2 years and the last at 12 years of age.
Facing her husband's declining health, they moved to Sawtelle, CA so he could be admitted to a disabled veteran's home located there while she made her home in Los Angeles. Less than two years later she passed away at age 76.
